About Q-D Bushings

The Q-D bushing is the flanged tapered bushing that Browning sheaves, sprockets and pulleys use where the hub is bored to the Q-D pattern. Its defining feature is that it can be mounted either way round. Align the tapped holes in the flange with the drilled holes in the hub and the flange faces the machine; reverse the two and the flange faces away from it. Either way the cap screws stay accessible from the outside, which is what makes it the practical choice where a drive is buried in a guard or against a wall. Sizes are stocked from JA at the small end through SH, SDS, SD, SK and SF and on up, each rated for a stated drive torque.

Also known as: qd bushings, q d bushing, sk bushing, sf bushing, quick detachable bushings

Series in this category

Browning Q-D bushings — The Q-D range on one page, with bore ranges, cap screw sizes, torque capacities and wrench torque set out together.
Split taper bushings — The other Browning system, keyed to both shaft and hub, for hubs bored to the Split Taper pattern.
V-belt sheaves — Q-D bored sheaves, whose part numbers carry the bushing letter, as in 1B34SH or 23V2500SF.
Sprockets — Roller chain sprockets bored for the Q-D pattern, which take the same letters as the sheaves.

How to choose q-d bushings

Take the letter from the part, the bore from the shaft: A Q-D hub is bored for one letter and will accept nothing else, so the letter is read off the sheave, sprocket or pulley. Stocked letters run JA, SH, SDS, SD, SK, SF and on through E, F, J, M, N and P. Each covers a span of bores: JA about 1/2 to 1 1/4 inch, SH about 1/2 to 1 5/8 inch, SDS and SD about 1/2 to 2 inch, SK about 1/2 to 2 5/8 inch and SF about 1/2 to 2 15/16 inch.
Check the torque the letter is rated for: Each Q-D size carries a stated torque capacity, and it climbs steeply with the letter: about 1,000 inch-pounds on JA, 3,500 on SH, 5,000 on SDS and SD, 7,000 on SK, and tens of thousands on the larger letters up to about 250,000 inch-pounds. A drive close to the top of a letter's rating is a reason to move the whole assembly up a size rather than to over-tighten the one it has.
Decide which way the flange should face: Mounted with the flange toward the machine, the cap screws pass through the hub into tapped holes in the flange; reversed, they pass through the flange into tapped holes in the hub. Both are correct assemblies and both leave the screws reachable from outside, so the choice is made on what the installation allows rather than on any difference in holding power.
Tighten to the listed wrench torque, not by feel: Wrench torque figures are stated in foot-pounds and run from about 6 on JA and 9 on the SH, SDS and SD sizes up through 15 on SK and far higher on the large letters. The screws are tightened progressively and uniformly so the bushing draws squarely into the taper, then checked again after the drive has run in.

Specifications explained

What each q-d bushings specification means
Specification	What it means
Bushing type	The letter: JA, SH, SDS, SD, SK and SF at the common sizes, and E, F, J, M, N and P above them.
Bore size and bore type	The finished bore, in inches from about 1/2 to 7 or in millimeters from about 24 to 100.
Keyway	The key cut in the bore, width by depth, such as 1/4 by 1/8 inch or 22 by 7 millimeters.
Torque capacity	The drive torque the mounted bushing is rated for, in inch-pounds, from about 1,000 on JA upward.
Cap screws and bolt circle	How many screws hold the bushing, their thread and length, and the diameter of the circle they sit on.
Wrench torque	The tightening torque for those screws, stated in foot-pounds, from about 6 on the smallest letter.
Material	Ductile iron on most sizes, which is what carries the clamping load without the flange spreading.

Common questions

How does a Q-D bushing come off?

Through the cap screws. They are taken out of the holes that drove the assembly together and threaded into the tapped withdrawal holes instead, then tightened progressively until the bushing is pushed free of the taper, at which point the whole assembly lifts off the shaft. The screws stay reachable from outside whichever way the flange was mounted, which is what makes this possible in a confined drive.

Will a Browning Q-D bushing fit another maker's sheave?

Where that sheave is bored to the Q-D pattern, yes: the Q-D range is made to be fully interchangeable with the equivalent Q-D bushings from other manufacturers. Confirm the letter and the bore before ordering, since the letter is what has to match the hub and the bore is what has to match the shaft.

Does a Q-D bushing have a setscrew?

All the stocked sizes except JA carry a setscrew over the keyway. It holds the key and the bushing in position while the assembly is being drawn up, and it is not what transmits the drive torque, which is carried by the key and the clamping grip of the taper.

Which is stronger, Q-D or Split Taper?

For the same nominal size the Split Taper system carries more torque, because it is keyed to the hub as well as to the shaft and the drive load never passes through the cap screws. The Q-D system trades some of that for reversible mounting and easy removal in tight spaces. In practice the choice is made by the hub, since each part is bored for one system only.
