About Split Taper Bushings

The Split Taper bushing is the higher-torque of the two Browning bushing systems. Its barrel is split twice so it closes evenly on the shaft rather than pulling to one side, its flange is solid so the bores stay concentric, and most sizes carry an external key that engages the hub. That external key is the point of the design: with the bushing keyed to both the shaft and the hub, the drive torque runs through steel and the cap screws only hold the taper closed. The taper itself is 3/4 inch per foot, which is self-locking, so the assembly stays put once tightened and comes apart again through the withdrawal holes.

Also known as: split taper bushing, browning bushings, h bushing, q1 bushing

Series in this category

Browning split taper bushings — The full Split Taper range in the G, H, P, B, Q, R, S, U, W and Y letters, in inch, millimeter and spline bores.
Q-D bushings — The alternative system, for hubs bored to the Q-D pattern rather than the Split Taper pattern.
V-belt sheaves — Bushed sheaves whose listings name the Split Taper letter the hub is bored for.
FHP sheaves — The AKH and BKH fractional sheaves, which take an H bushing in place of a finished bore.
Sprockets — Bushed roller chain sprockets, which mount on the same Split Taper letters as the sheaves.

How to choose split taper bushings

The letter comes from the hub you are mounting: Each bushed sheave, sprocket or pulley is bored for one letter, and that letter fixes the bushing's outside dimensions. The stocked letters run G and H at the small end, through P1, P2, P3, B, Q1, Q2 and Q3, to R, S, U, W and Y at the large end. Reading the letter off the part being mounted is the first step, because a bushing of the wrong letter will not enter the hub at all.
Then check the shaft falls in that letter's bore range: Each letter covers a span of bores rather than a single one. An H bushing covers about 3/8 to 1 1/2 inch, a P1 about 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch, a B about 1/2 to 2 7/16 inch, a Q1 about 3/4 to 2 11/16 inch and an R1 about 1 1/8 to 3 3/4 inch. Where the shaft is outside the range of the letter the hub takes, the part being mounted has to change, not just the bushing.
Inch, millimeter or spline: Bores are stocked in three forms. Inch bores cover 3/8 to 7 7/16 inch across the range, millimeter bores cover 10 to 95 millimeters, and spline bores cover 5/8 to 1 3/8 inch in the 6B and 10B forms and in 10 and 21 tooth involute. The keyseat is listed against each bore, and a few small bores are supplied with no keyway at all.
Tighten the cap screws to the listed figure: The clamping force, and therefore the torque the assembly will hold, is set by the cap screws. Figures rise with the letter: about 95 inch-pounds on the G and H sizes, 192 on the P and B sizes, 348 on the Q sizes and higher again above them. The screws are drawn down progressively and uniformly, and the assembly is rechecked after the drive has run for a few hours.

Note which sizes are steel and which are iron

The range is mostly sintered steel or ductile iron, but a handful of sizes differ and the listing states the material. Several R and S sizes in the smaller bores are steel, some U sizes in the larger bores are cast iron, and the W and Y letters are gray iron. Where a drive is close to the rated torque the material is worth reading rather than assuming.

Specifications explained

What each split taper bushings specification means
Specification	What it means
Bushing type	The letter, from G and H through P1, P2, P3, B, Q1, Q2, Q3, R1, R2, S1, S2 and the U, W and Y sizes.
Bore size and compatible bore	The finished bore the bushing is machined to, in inches or millimeters, within the span the letter covers.
Keyseat	The key cut in the bore, stated as width by depth. A few small bores are listed with no keyway.
Flange type	Solid flange or split-through flange. The solid flange is what keeps the bores concentric as the barrel closes.
Cap screws	How many screws draw the bushing into the hub and their thread and length, typically two, three or four.
Wrench torque	The tightening torque for those screws in inch-pounds, from about 95 on the smallest letters upward.
Length through bore and outside diameter	How far the bushing engages the shaft and how large it is overall, which is what the hub has to accommodate.

Common questions

What does the 3/4 inch per foot taper mean?

It states how quickly the barrel narrows along its length: three quarters of an inch of diameter for every foot of length. That angle is shallow enough to be self-locking, so once the cap screws have drawn the bushing into the hub the assembly holds itself on the shaft and does not need a separate locking device. The same angle is used on every Browning Split Taper size.

Which bushing does my sheave take?

The one its hub is bored for, and the sheave listing names it. Part numbers often carry it too: a trailing H on an AK or BK fractional sheave means an H bushing, and a trailing letter on a larger sheave number, as in 8C70Q, means a Q bushing. The shaft size then chooses the bore within that letter's range.

Can the same bushing be used on a sprocket and a sheave?

Yes, provided both hubs are bored for the same letter. The Split Taper system is common across Browning sheaves, sprockets and pulleys, which is part of why it is stocked so deeply: a plant that standardizes on a few letters can hold one set of bushings for several kinds of drive component.

Why is my bushing keyed on the outside as well as the bore?

So that the drive torque is carried by keys rather than by friction on the cap screws. The internal keyseat locks the bushing to the shaft and the external key locks it to the hub, which is what gives this system the highest torque capacity in the Browning bushing range. A small number of sizes are supplied without the external key, and those listings state it.
