About Pillow Blocks

A pillow block is a mounted bearing whose housing has a foot, so it bolts to a surface lying parallel to the shaft and supports the shaft above that surface. It is the standard way to carry a length of line shafting, a conveyor pulley or a fan shaft where the frame offers a flat mounting rail. Load is meant to pass down through the base into the frame, which is what makes the base-to-center height and the bolt hole spacing the two dimensions that decide whether a given unit will actually drop into an existing machine.

Also known as: pillow block bearings, pillow block bearing units, plummer blocks, pillow blocks

Series in this category

Sealmaster pillow blocks — NP standard-duty, MP and EMP medium-duty, NPL low-base, SP heavy-duty and TB tapped-base units, and the CRPS and CRPC corrosion-resistant lines.
Browning pillow blocks — VPS, VPE, VPLE and VPB units, and VTBS tapped-base blocks.
System Plast pillow blocks — UCP and UCPA units in polyamide and Nolu-Clean housings for washdown lines, priced on request.
Tapered roller pillow blocks — For loads and shock beyond what a ball-bearing block is rated for.

How to choose pillow blocks

Measure base to center height and bolt spacing first: These two dimensions decide whether a unit fits the holes already drilled in the frame and leaves the shaft at the height the machine expects. Shaft size narrows the choice but does not settle it, and a unit that is right on bore and wrong on height will not go in.
Decide which end of the shaft floats: A shaft carried on two pillow blocks grows and shrinks with temperature. One unit should hold the shaft axially and the other should allow it to move, otherwise thermal growth is taken out on the bearings themselves. Fixing both ends is a common and expensive installation mistake.
Choose the base style for the access you have: A standard two-bolt base suits an open rail. A low base drops the shaft closer to the mounting surface where headroom is tight. A tapped base bolts from underneath, which is the answer when there is no room to get a spanner to a nut on top.
Keep heavy thrust off a pillow block: The housing is built to pass radial load into its base, and the insert holds only modest axial load through its locking collar. A shaft with real end thrust on it needs that thrust taken somewhere designed for it rather than absorbed by a standard pillow block.
Match the duty series to the load, not just the shaft: Normal-duty and medium-duty housings exist in the same bore sizes with different section thickness and different inserts. On shock-loaded or heavily loaded equipment the heavier series is what stops the housing cracking, and the bore alone gives no hint of which one is fitted.

Specifications explained

What each pillow blocks specification means
Specification	What it means
Shaft size	The bore the unit takes, and the first filter when identifying a replacement from the shaft itself.
Base to center height	Mounting surface to shaft centerline. Must match the existing installation or the shaft sits at the wrong height.
Bolt hole spacing	Distance between mounting hole centers, which has to line up with the holes already in the frame.
Base style	Standard two-bolt, low base or tapped base — the form that suits the headroom and the bolt access available.
Housing duty	The weight of the housing section, normal or medium duty, which sets what shock loading it survives.
Locking type	Setscrew, eccentric collar, concentric collar or adapter sleeve, matching the rotation and load pattern.

Common questions

Is a plummer block the same as a pillow block?

Yes. Plummer block is the term used through most of the world outside North America for the same based housing carrying a shaft above its mounting surface, and catalogs written for a global market often use the two interchangeably.

On a shaft with two pillow blocks, which one should float?

Hold the shaft at the end where position matters — typically the drive end or wherever a coupling or sprocket has to stay put — and let the other end take up the thermal growth. What matters most is that exactly one end is fixed, not which one.

Can a pillow block take axial load?

Only a light one. The insert can hold modest thrust through its locking collar, but the housing is designed to pass radial load into its base. Sustained end thrust should be carried by a bearing arrangement chosen for it, not absorbed by a standard unit.

How do I identify a replacement from the unit on the machine?

Take the shaft diameter, the height from the mounting surface to the shaft centerline, and the distance between the mounting bolt centers. Those three, with the locking style and the number of mounting bolts, are enough to identify an equivalent even when the original marking has worn away.
